Energy Future

The Grid

Picture
Electricity is a fuel which most of the world is run on.  Just like fuel in your car, fuel burns and we travel a distance, but some cars use more because they go faster and that is exactly the same as electricity. We generate it at power stations (Map of Queensland Power Stations Here) and it goes over electrical lines all connected to each other, this is exactly the same as say the internet or the phone line.

The Power system is commonly referred to as the grid and when you experience a blackout it could be damage in the grid, most commonly caused by ecological events such as extreme heat, storms or fires.

if there is insufficient electricity supply to meet demand, the grid managers will "load-shed", dropping segments of the grid from supply, usually on a rotational basis. This has not occurred in Queensland in many years.

in developing countries electricity grids may suffer from voltage problems which lead to brown-outs, Brownouts are power coming and going and the power supply is too strained it thins and thins until it gives up and it can cause some appliances to malvunction such as lights dimming or damaging themselves. These are rarely experienced in Australia.
